Changes to Branch Reading Club Checkout System

This summer we're making a major change to how we check out books to students. We've gotten rid of the old sign-out sheets and book numbers-a system that you probably remember from grade school. Now students will use their personal library cards to check out their reading club books!

We pilot tested this system last term at the Fremont branch, where it worked well. This summer we're taking it to three branches-Centerville, Newark, and Castro Valley. In the fall, all the branch reading clubs will be using the new system.

If you are a branch tutor, please click here for the new instructions. Please read them and let Sally Ianiro know if any parts are unclear. All feedback of any kind is welcome!

If you are a Fremont tutor, your instructions are slightly different, and you'll receive them in an email before the term starts.

With your help, we'll have a smooth changeover to the new check out system.

Thank you for being such a valuable part of Write to Read.

Easy Voter Guide

June 3, 2014 IS PRIMARY ELECTION DAY!

How will we choose our next Governor? What are the two state propositions?
May 19, 2014 ..........Last day to register to vote in this election

May 27, 2014 ..........Last day to request a “vote by mail” ballot

Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Hi Tutors,

We highly recommend the The Easy Voter Guide, which has been providing literacy students and new voters with nonpartisan, easy-to-read election information in California since 1994. It’s such a great tool that many adults in California use it, not just literacy students.

The guide is now available online for the June 3, 2014 Primary Election in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean at http://www.easyvoterguide.org/.

The Alameda County Library also has a terrific voter website at http://guides.aclibrary.org/elections. If your student isn’t yet registered to vote, this is a great place to start.

Thank you for encouraging participation in democracy and sharing your knowledge!

Food For Fines

Does your student have outstanding library fines?
Here’s a way to help hungry families and decrease fines by up to $20!
April 13-19, 2014

The Alameda County Community Food Bank serves one in six Alameda County residents, and it’s running low on food!

For National Library Week in April, Alameda County Library is partnering with the Food Bank. We’re inviting library card holders with fines to bring in items for the food bank. For each non-perishable food item brought to the library, $1.00 will be subtracted from the patron’s overdue fines, to a maximum of $20.

The Food Bank needs non-perishable items like peanut butter, canned tuna and meat, beans, rice, low-sodium soups and stews, and low-sugar cereal. Only non-perishable, unexpired, store-sealed items will be accepted. No glass bottles, please!

The participating branches are:

Albany Library (510-526-3720)
Castro Valley Library (510-667-7900)
Centerville Library (510-795-2629)
Dublin Library (925-803-7252)
Fremont Main Library (510-745-1400)
Irvington Library (510-795-2631)
Newark Library (510-795-2627)
Niles Library (510-795-2626)
San Lorenzo Library (510-670-6283)
Union City Library (510-745-1464)

WELCOME TO THE WEBSITE FOR READING CLUB TUTORS!

This is an online space for Write to Read’s 14 reading club tutors to find resources, share ideas, and ask questions.

This week's moment of humor comes from one of Judy Tokubo's students in the Newark Reading Club. Here's what she wrote to accompany a gift to Judy.

Judy,
I am trying to ingratiate myself with you by offering this candy because I often act like a class nuisance by asking odd questions. You are a great teacher.
